Natural vs Lab-Grown Emeralds: Can Anyone Actually Tell?

Put a natural emerald and a lab-grown one side by side. Even trained gemologists need specialized equipment to tell them apart. Here's what the science actually says.

The Anatomy of an Emerald

Emerald is the green variety of beryl — a beryllium aluminum silicate mineral. Its color comes from trace chromium and sometimes vanadium. Both natural and lab-grown emeralds are beryl. Both get their color from the same elements. The only difference is where and how the crystal grew.

Natural emeralds form over millions of years in hydrothermal veins. Lab-grown emeralds are produced in weeks or months using either hydrothermal growth (closely mimicking natural formation) or flux growth. Hydrothermal lab-grown emeralds are harder to distinguish from natural stones and are considered the higher-quality type.

What Gemologists Actually Look For

A trained gemologist examining an emerald under magnification looks for inclusions called a jardin — French for garden. Natural emeralds typically contain three-phase inclusions (solid, liquid, and gas trapped together), fibrous crystals, and healing fractures filled with fluids.

Hydrothermal lab-grown emeralds can produce very similar inclusions. The telling signs are subtle: certain types of wavy growth veils or specific patterns in two-phase inclusions. Flux-grown stones are more distinguishable because they often contain angular inclusions and flux residue.

The definitive test requires a spectroscope and UV lamp. Natural Colombian emeralds fluoresce differently than hydrothermal lab-grown stones under short-wave UV. Without these tools, visual identification is genuinely unreliable — even experienced gemologists get it wrong.

The Clarity Question: Why Lab-Grown Often Looks Better

Emerald is notorious for inclusions. An eye-clean natural emerald is genuinely rare — most natural stones are heavily included, which is why the trade uses the term jardin to romanticize what is objectively a flaw. The emerald industry accepts inclusions that would make any other gemstone nearly unsaleable.

Lab-grown emeralds, particularly hydrothermal ones, can be produced with significantly fewer inclusions. A buyer who prioritizes a visually clean stone with strong color may actually get a better-looking emerald from a lab than from nature — and at a fraction of the cost.

The Trade-Off: Inclusions as Authenticity Markers

Some collectors prefer heavily included natural emeralds because the inclusions tell the stone’s geological story. For them, a very clean stone can feel inauthentic. This is a niche preference but a real one — worth knowing if you are buying for someone who cares about provenance.

Price Comparison

Fine natural emeralds with good color and moderate clarity run $1,000–$10,000 per carat at retail. Exceptional Colombian stones with certificates from Gübelin or SSEF can reach $20,000+ per carat.

Lab-grown emeralds of comparable visual quality sell for $100–$400 per carat. For a 2-carat center stone, the difference between natural and lab-grown could be $15,000 or more — money that can go into the setting, the band, or simply stay in your pocket.

When Natural Origin Actually Matters

  • Collector value — Stones with verifiable Colombian or Zambian origin certificates can appreciate. Lab-grown stones do not carry the same collector premium.

  • Heirloom symbolism — Some buyers want the geological story. A million-year-old crystal carries a different weight than one grown in six months.

  • Wholesale investment — For buyers acquiring stones specifically as assets to resell, natural origin remains the more liquid market at the high end.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are lab-grown emeralds real emeralds?

Yes. The FTC recognizes lab-grown emeralds as real emeralds. They have the same chemical composition, crystal structure, and physical properties as mined stones.

Does an emerald need to be oiled or treated?

Most natural emeralds are oiled — a surface-reaching fracture is filled with cedar oil or resin to improve appearance. Lab-grown emeralds often require less treatment because they have fewer fractures. A certificate will disclose treatment level.

How should I clean a lab-grown emerald?

Warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and steam, which can damage the stone or its setting.

Can I use an emerald in an engagement ring?

Yes, with care. Emerald scores 7.5–8 on Mohs — harder than most gemstones but softer than sapphire or ruby. With a protective setting and sensible care habits, it works well. Consider a bezel or halo setting to protect the edges.
