Lab-grown diamonds share the same chemical composition, crystal structure, and optical properties as mined diamonds. Both are pure crystallized carbon. The difference is origin: lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled environments using CVD or HPHT technology, not mined from the earth.
For buyers, this means access to larger, higher-clarity stones at a more accessible price point, with full traceability and a significantly lower environmental footprint.
Colour is the Most Important
Quality Factor.
Diamond color is graded on the GIA scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). Lab-grown diamonds, including CVD diamonds and HPHT diamonds, are graded on the exact same color scale as natural diamonds, since the grade reflects the stone itself, not how it was created.
Because lab-grown diamond rough is more abundant and less costly to produce, buyers can move up several color grades for the same budget compared to a mined diamond of similar quality. When shopping for a lab-grown or CVD diamond, look for:
A color grade of D-F for a truly colorless stone, ideal for platinum or white gold settings.

Price still scales with size — larger, high-clarity, vivid-green lab grown emeralds command higher prices — but the price-per-carat jump is far less dramatic than with mined stones.
